THE CENTER
FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS AND LAW

Advancing principles of environmental ethics in law and life.

PURPOSE

OUR MISSION, OUR VISION

OUR FOUNDATIONS
  • The natural environment is the foundation of all life. Decisions that we make every day, as individuals, as organizations, and as governments, affect our environment, and all life that depends upon it, in every way.
  • Ethics is the domain of inquiry that examines claims about what is right or wrong, just or unjust, obligatory or non-obligatory.
  • Environmental ethics expands the domain of inquiry into our obligations to the entire community of life, for the sustainability and flourishing of the entire community of life.
  • Ethics are the foundation for the rule of law, or the body of rules, policies, and programs that guide and govern a society in order to best protect that society.
  • Laws guide and are influenced by all sectors of society, and they include hard law and soft law. Hard law is enforceable law and includes case law, statutory law, constitutional law, and international treaty obligations. Soft law is a body of comparative, multi-disciplinary research, documents, and analysis that serves to inform decision-makers at the individual, organizational, and governmental level.
  • All decisions – whether translated into law, policies, or organizational or individual action – have ethical underpinnings. Ethical engagement seeks to draw out those ethical underpinnings and bring them to the forefront. Applied ethics is the process of using ethical engagement to inform and guide future action.

OUR MISSION
The Center for Environmental Ethics and Law seeks to bear witness to, share, and expand upon principles of environmental ethics in order to better inform local, regional, national, and international decision-makers when drafting and implementing law, policies, and programs.

OUR VISION
Our vision is a just, sustainable, flourishing world where individuals and organizations, whether government, private, or public, make decisions rooted in principles of environmental ethics.
